Permaculture design is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems that demonstrate the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems.

The philosophy behind permaculture is to cooperate with nature, not against it. From long-term thoughtful observations, not long-term thoughtless behavior. Examine the system with all features, rather than just asking for a return from the system. Allows the system to demonstrate its own development.
